Summerween

Summer Halloween. Summerween. I'm pretty sure the name started being more wide-spread with Gravity Falls, I tend to think of Summerween as more of a season than a specific date. It's that time in usually July, sometimes stretching back into June or up into August, where I just kinda get into the Halloween mood. Summerween, in my mind, has a different vibe, though. Still that creep factor, but I think of more Creature Features and cryptids, maybe some curses. Less orangey more purpley and green. Lots of Goosebumps books, ghost stories around the campfire, midnight treks in the woods.

With this page, my plan is to share movie recommendations and any graphics that have more of the summerween vibe. With movies I'm determined not to overlap with my Halloween list, but there might be a couple of graphics that are in both places.

Movie Recommendations

Us (2019) Rated R- This is my perfect summer horror movie and I try to watch it every Fourth of July. I first saw this in a cheap theater in the top floor of a nearly dead mall that's now demolished and I was jumping out of my skin even in the daylight while my mom and I walked back to the car. And the commentary within the movie is so spot on and the concept is amazing and the visuals! I recommend this movie to everyone.

Fear Street Part One/Two/Three (2021) Rated R- I fell in love with these when I still had my Netflix subscription. These absolutely knocked it out of the park! Even after several rewatches, the dread in my stomach only gets worse. I'm putting these together as one recommendation because they all tell an overarching story, and Part 3 jumps back to end Part 1. All three work together so perfectly and the setting is fleshed out so wonderfully. Also all three really just encompass pretty much everything I think of when it comes to Summerween!

Jaws (1975) Rated PG- Oh man, my original childhood summer horror that was also part of my shark obsession. The grip that this movie had on 12 year old me can never be forgotten! I still have some scenes memorized I watched it so much. I still absolutely adore it and love rewatching it a million times during the summer! Each character has a surprising amount of depth to them even though on the surface they appear like stereotypes, and the drama in the town can't be underestimated! Quick warning, though- even though it's rated PG, that was back before the PG-13 rating... they REALLY mean "Parental Guidance" when it comes to this!

Deep Blue Sea (1999) Rated R- Are parts of this corny? Yes. Impossible science? Absolutely. But oh my goodness I LOVE IT. It balances corny and serious and the typical creature-feature action so so well, and there's some really good writing moments in here. Samuel L Jackson's monologue is fantastic. And the score is SO GOOD!

Alien (1979) Rated R-

Annabelle: Creation (2017) Rated R-

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) Rated R-
