Halloween is absolutely my favorite holiday! So I'm putting everything I can think of in here: from movie and music recommendations to graphics and maybe later I'll do some decor and pumpkin carving ideas, and vintage Halloween things!
General Spooky Fun Halloween Playlist | Atmospheric Dark Halloween Playlist
I know horror movies in general are a good general pick for Halloween, but even among horror movies there are just some that are More Halloween-y! So I'm going to stick with what really gets me in the Halloween mood.
Trick R Treat (2007) Rated R- It's kind of the ultimate Halloween movie. It's set on Halloween but also every single frame of it just oozes Halloween. Sets, costumes, lighting, the whole mood of it. It's an anthology- there's four separate stories that all connect together in a really fun way, and each story stands on its own. And Sam, our avatar of Halloween, is both cute and terrifying. Ever since I first saw this I always have to leave one Jack o'Lantern on until after midnight, even if mine are just plug ins! Quick warning, though: if gore is hard for you, please check out some warnings online. It's not gory in a slasher way, more of a camp fire story way, if that makes sense.
House on Haunted Hill (1959) Not Rated- Oh this movie is a delight! I saw it as a child and I've loved it ever since. I think it still holds up really well- I never saw the plot twist coming! And there's one effect that I'm still trying to figure out how they did it. There is a lot of over the top Vintage Damsel Screaming, but the whole thing is just pure spooky fun!
Halloween + Halloween 2018 Both Rated R- My mom got me into these! The 1978 has been a classic for a long time, and I think the 2018 version is a fantastic sequel. A good slasher that just feels ominous and perfect for Halloween.
Late Night With The Devil (2023) Rated R-
Hell House LLC (2015) Not Rated-
The Blair Witch Project (1999) Rated R- I didn't see this one until high school and I was so convinced this was real for a while! It is The found footage horror movie and I try to re-watch it every Halloween season just to appreciate it. It really feels real and that's what's so terrifying about it!
Cabin in the Woods (2011) Rated R- I know the phrase "a love letter to horror fans" gets thrown around a LOT when it comes to describing movies... but this really is a love letter to horror fans! It's all the standard tropes in the absolute best way possible... and with a twist! I won't spoil the movie for you but it is an absolute thrill ride and perfect to rewatch again and again!
Scream (1996) Rated R- The first scene still punches me in the stomach even when I know what's coming! Another classic for a very good reason, and another one that's good to rewatch again and again.
Sinister (2012) Rated R- This is for a very dark Halloween. It's probably got the least amount of "Halloween Vibes" out of everything on the list but I had to include it because this *thing* fills me with so much dread no matter how many times I watch it.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019) Rated PG-13- It's good Halloween fun with some good characters and a great soundtrack! I've been a fan of the book trilogy ever since I was very young and I think this is a great tribute to it. So many scenes had me whispering "oh no it's *that one*" in the theater, and they pretty much always delivered.
Annabelle Comes Home (2019) Rated R- This one actually isn't my favorite movie in the Annabelle franchise (that goes to Annabelle: Creation) but I absolutely love watching it around Halloween because it's such a good haunted house movie! There were so many moments that made me squirm, and one in particular that still makes my stomach drop. It's like going through a haunted house attraction and I mean that as a compliment.
The Haunting (1999) Rated PG-13- Okay hear me out... I know a lot of people have a problem with this movie, but I actually really like it! It really brings me back to being a kid watching horror movies. The set is absolutely gorgeous and while some effects are better than others, I think in general it holds up. It's pure nostalgia.
